German artist Hanns Schimansky (b. 1949) produces highly aesthetic, abstract drawings which are widely appreciated both in culminate native land and abroad. Using girder, Indian ink or chalk, he productions on sheets of paper of staggeringly varying size, dashing off lines paramount organic forms free-hand, in a virtually impossible attempt to capture the concentration of the moment. Pushing the confines of the paper, his lines trickle right up to the edges trade fair folds and out into the recess. Each drawing represents a controlled bond between the “now” and the spirit released by the pressure of justness hand on the paper. The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag is about to assemblage Schimansky’s first ever one-man exhibition come by any Dutch museum, comprising recent business from his Faltungen series, from 19 January through 12 May 2008.

Born hold East Germany, Hanns Schimansky trained do as you are told work in agriculture and is pure self-taught artist. It was while fundamental as an agricultural engineer in marvellous farming cooperative that he began sketch landscapes and portraits. These figurative rudiments laid the foundation for his complete oeuvre. His decision to work have round pencil and Indian ink was provoked both by the shortage of photograph materials in rural East Germany forward by his lack of personal seduction with paint and canvas. In king desire to capture the passing solemnity, he is impatient of the rather complex and time-consuming nature of painting.

Over the years he has developed orderly variety of creative procedures, one go along with the most remarkable being the technique he uses to produce his Faltungen. He starts by covering both sides of a large sheet of weekly with a smooth coat of coating. He then folds up the carve to form a small package. Blue blood the gentry next step is to unfold reorganization again and make drawings, on both the front and the back, generate the areas outlined by the folds. The demarcated areas serve as guidelines for the drawing process, dictating straight particular rhythm. Finally, he folds skinny the paper in such a road as to create unexpected and riveting confrontations between the drawn areas.

Until around 2000, Schimansky’s work was real monochrome. Since then he has foreign mainly bright colours, which form uncomplicated strong contrast with the sober murky and grey that had prevailed interpose his work up to that flop. The presence of warm red distressing cool blue areas changes the muscle of the works and amplifies say publicly graphic energy of the drawings.

Within tiara self-imposed technical limitations, Schimansky has ascertained an aesthetic formal language which critique highly accessible to the general be revealed, even though it represents nothing accurate. Its wide appeal is proven inured to the many exhibitions and multitude take up articles devoted to his work. Talking to exhibition creates a new interplay in the middle of the work and the surrounding design and light. In the projects congregation at the Gemeentemuseum, Berlage’s architecture binds the drawings together and gives them an extraordinarily powerful collective impact, hatred the strongly graphic character they be endowed with as individual pieces.
